With a number of film shoots safely and securely completed since lockdown began, United Visual are able to continue production during the pandemic by practicing a COVID-19 specific health and safety policy.

Drawn up to comply with the government’s latest
COVID-19 guidelines and British Film Commission recommendations, the policy is enforced to protect the health of our team members, clients, cast and crew and
to support the national effort to prevent the spread of
the virus.

The following details, whilst not exhaustive, provide a summary of the procedures United Visual are using during the current crisis.

Home Working
All pre-production and post-production work is being undertaken from home with no current impact on workflow.

COVID Briefing

COVID-19 filming procedures concerning production days will be emailed to crew, cast and clients in advance of the filming day/s.

Temperature checks

All attendees to the filming day (crew, cast and clients) will be subject to temperature checks before filming and on each subsequent day of production. If any attendees show symptoms of either a new persistent dry cough or a fever/temperature they will be asked not to attend the production and self isolate.

Travel procedures
Where filming locations are under three hours from United Visual HQ, the production team will drive to shoots. Team members will travel separately in order to maintain social distancing. Where public transport needs to be used, social distancing will be maintained where possible, and masks must be worn. Additional crew members, cast and clients will also be requested to adhere to the guidelines.

Crew numbers
To ensure minimum project risk, crew members will be kept to only those deemed absolutely essential to the production, such as director and camera operator. Where possible, crew members will be multi skilled and will perform a number of roles as per job requirements.

Cast numbers
Depending on the project requirements, measures will be undertaken to ensure that any filming requiring large numbers of cast members in the same place at the same time is carried out in the safest way possible. This may mean a differing approach to the production techniques in order to ensure that correct social distancing and COVID-19 hygiene measures are adhered to.

Client numbers
To further help reduce project risk, we ask that only essential members of the client team attend filming days. Provisions will be made to provide live digital/online access to other client members so that they may input remotely.

Social distance filming procedures
When carrying out filming, social distancing of 2 metres will be kept between the crew, cast and clients at all times. When filming indoors, where possible larger or separate rooms will be used to further ensure social distancing is possible.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Surgical masks and gloves will be worn by crew members at all times when filming indoors.

Hand washing and sanitiser gel
Strict hygiene rules will be adhered to with regular hand washing/sanitisation carried out by crew, clients and cast members. Alcohol-based hand sanitiser will be supplied in the event of hand washing facilities being unavailable at a filming location.

Crew and cast will not accept drinks or food from clients. Cast members and clients must not touch any filming equipment or help carry any kit bags. Where possible, only the camera operator will handle/carry kit. Where kit does need to be handled by the director, for example when carrying a camera tripod or lighting outside, surgical gloves will be worn.

Use of microphones
To maintain social distancing and prevent unnecessary contact with cast members, all sound will be recorded using overhead boom microphones. The microphones will be mounted on stands and put into position by crew whilst maintaining social distancing. If for any reason boom microphones cannot be used and there is the need for personal microphones to be used instead, such as for windy scenarios or walking and talking shots, the personal microphones will be disinfected and placed in a suitable location for cast members to collect and put on themselves.

Make up and hair
Crew will no longer be able to apply make-up or style hair of cast members. Where possible, the cast will be asked to style their own hair and supply their own make up to apply themselves as necessary when needed, such as before filming and touch ups between takes. In the unlikely event of the cast member not having available makeup, provisions will be made and items for the specific individual use of the cast member will be ordered in advance of filming.

Filming with individuals who are at higher risk from COVID-19
Filming with any individuals or individuals who are deemed ‘vulnerable’ to Coronavirus (older people, pregnant women and those with health conditions) will only be undertaken outside, maintaining a safe 2 metre distance between the cast, crew and clients.

On set/location situation monitoring
Before filming commences and throughout the filming duration, regular checks will be carried out to ensure that all COVID-19 related measures and protocols are in place and being adhered to. Should for any reason measures are not being met, production will be halted until a time that the situation can be rectified.

Halting production
If for any reason, any person attending the filming should report feeling unwell or display any symptoms of COVID-19, production will be immediately halted and all crew, cast and crew asked to leave and self-isolate for 14 days. Track and trace information will be requested and submitted to the relevant channels.
