To celebrate the release of the 10th edition of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, OUP wanted to embark on an awareness campaign that shone a light on the history and origin of the dictionary (see The Man Who Made Dictionaries), discuss how the new edition was put together and put human faces to the process and also celebrate the success and importance of the dictionary to scholars around the world and the lasting legacy of A.S.Hornby and the Hornby Trust.
To delve into the creation of the new edition, 4 of the key editors were chosen to be interviewed to describe their involvement in the different facets of the dictionary. In order to drive home the human aspect of compiling the dictionary the editors were filmed at their desks, the natural environment they work in. Filming the editors at their desks not only allowed them to give a behind the scenes glimpse and demonstrate some of the key working processes they went through in the compilation of the dictionary but also allowed the camera to capture the personal touches that adorned their work spaces from scribbled notes, decorative mugs to lucky teddy bears.
To showcase the lasting legacy of the dictionary and the work of the Hornby Trust, the visit of a group of Hornby Scholars to OUP was filmed as they toured the building and were given an advance look at the new edition. Following the tour and talk, the Scholars were then interviewed and invited to describe what they taught English and what their relationship is with the O.A.L.D. and how it helps their students.
Combined with The Man Who Made Dictionaries, the behind the scenes with the editors and the testimonials from the Scholars came together to create a strong trio of content to celebrate the launch of the 10th edition.
